Deck The Halls
A slapstick holiday heart-warmer in the tradition of HOME ALONE. DECK THE HALLS boasts an excellent cast that includes both seasoned actors and promising stars. Matthew Broderick (FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF) stars as Steve Finch, an optometrist in the postcard town of Cloverdale, Massachusetts, who does double duty as the town's "Christmas Guy." Steve's hopes for the perfect Christmas are disturbed, however, when new neighbors move in across the street. Car salesman Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito, BE COOL), his wife Tia (Kristen Chenoweth, RUNNING WITH SCISSORS), and their blonde-bombshell twin daughters (Sabrina and Kelly Aldridge) are a bit rowdier than most of the folks in the Finches' quiet neighborhood, to say the least. When Buddy takes it upon himself to create an extravagant Christmas spectacle so that his house can be seen from space, the rivalry between Steve and Buddy reaches drastic heights of ridiculousness, until both men learn a little something about the meaning of Christmas. Opting to raid the kitchens of Paris rather than the garbage cans and sewers of the city with his family, Remy is inspired by the philosophy of one of the city's most legendary chefs, the late Gusteau (Brad Garrett). One night, Remy can't resist practicing his skill in Gusteau's restaurant. While his guard is down, Remy is discovered by a klutzy young man, Linguini (Lou Romano), who cleans the kitchen. Together Remi and Linguini become a culinary duo. Soon Gusteau's restaurant becomes the talk of the town--but would it still be the toast of Paris if everyone knew a rat was running the show? Amazing Grace
Michael Apted, whose claim to fame until now has been the respected 7 UP documentary series, directs this lavish costume drama whose heart is as big as its budget. Though a marked departure, Apted's idealistic interests are well served by the story, which is based on the true tale of the 18th-century British politician William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd, who played Horatio Hornblower in the HORNBLOWER series). Though as a young man Wilberforce is torn between politics and the church, he is inspired to action by John Newton (Albert Finney), a penitent monk who is haunted by his past as a slave-ship captain. Wilberforce makes it his mission to end slavery in the British Empire, and, aided by a small band of radical thinkers and unlikely supporters, he annually presents a bill for abolition to Parliament. The talented cast includes Michael Gambon as Lord Fox, an old gent who turns out to be more lucid than anyone would have guessed, as well as Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour as Oloudaqh Equiano, a regal former slave turned activist. Terrence Malick (BADLANDS), who produced the film, leaves his mark in the stunning visuals. Street Date: 11/13/2007 Genre: Drama Rating: PG $19.49
