This week marks a sad day in movie history. On February 3, 1989, Hollywood lost one of it's most legendary and prolific talents - John Cassavetes. After a storied career, Cassavetes passed away prematurely at just 59.

While he may have died relatively young, he certainly made use of the time he had. As an actor, he starred in some of movie history's best films including the horror classic "Rosemary's Baby,"  as well as 1967's "The Dirty Dozen." and 1975's "Capone." His last movie was 1984 flick "Love Streams," which he also directed.

Throughout his career, Cassavetes also tried his hand at directing and financing movies, both with a lot of success. In particular, he will likely be best remembered for writing, directing and producing the 1968 drama "Faces." It went on to earn nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Actress and Actor.

He was also groundbreaking in the sense that he is considered one of the first filmmakers to use the documentary film style cinéma vérité, which has become much more common in recent years.
