It had been rumored that country crooner Taylor Swift was closing in on the role of Eponine in the upcoming big screen adaptation of "Les Miserables," but that is no longer the case. The part was recently given to British actress Samantha Barks, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The selection comes as somewhat of a surprise given the other big names that were vying for the role. Everyone from "Glee's" Lea Michele to Scarlett Johansson had reportedly been considered.

Barks has a close relationship with Cameron Mackintosh, the producer of the stage version as well as the forthcoming movie, according to the Times. She worked with Mackinstosh on the musical "Oliver" and also finished third on the reality competition "I'll Do Anything."

Barks will be joining a talented and diverse cast for the movie. In addition to having Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper at the helm, the film will star Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and include Anne Hathway, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Amanda Seyfried. The movie is set for a December 7 release date.

To pass the time until it hits theaters, musical fans can check out similar titles including "Chicago" and "Moulin Rouge."
