The Academy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday, and while there were several surprises, it was once again the silent film "The Aritst" leading the way. The movie earned 10 nominations and is considered by many to be the favorite to take home Best Picture, The Huffington Post reports.

Along with it's bid for the top prize, "The Artist" also got acting nominations with star Jean Dujardin taking home a nod for Best Actor and Berenice Bejo up for Best Supporting Actress. Michel Hazanavicius was nominated for both Best Director and Best Screenplay.

While "The Artist" may be the front-runner, it was the Martin Scorecese-directed "Hugo" that earned the most nominations with 11, including Best Picture and Best Director. Another film that made a splash was "The Help." The critical favorite was not only up for Best Picture, but three actors are nominated for individual awards including Viola Davis for Best Actress.

Perhaps one of the most surprising nominations was Melissa McCarthy, who will be up for Best Supporting Actress for her scene-stealing role in the comedy "Bridesmaids."

Some of the other popular movies to get Best Picture nominations include "Midnight in Paris" and "Moneyball."
