The "Underworld" film series has been a boon for its star Kate Beckinsale, and the recently-released fourth installment proved to have a similar effect on the box office as well. "Underworld: Awakening" opened in the top spot with $25.4 million, continuing a resurgence early in 2012, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The film earned considerably more than its predecessor, 2009's "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," which opened with 20.8 million. However, the film also did not have the considerable draw of Beckinsale, who has become synonymous with the franchise over the years.

According to the publication, the movie beat out a number of other anticipated films for the top spot, namely the George Lucas-produced "Red Tails," which starred Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard. The World War II-era film fared better than expected, however, with $19.1 million.

Fans of Beckinsale and the 'Underworld' series may want to check her out in other films as well including the Adam Sandler comedy "Click" and the Oscar nominated biopic "The Aviator."
