The BBC series "Sherlock" has been a surprise hit in the United States, and the network recently gave fans a spot of good news. The show has been picked up for a third season though there is some uncertainty whether its star will be back, Deadline report.

The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, the iconic investigator from Arthur Conan Doyle's books. However, Cumberbatch is high in demand at the moment and will be appearing in a sequel to "Star Trek" as well as "The Hobbit." Despite his busy schedule, his representation is confident he'll be back for the third season.

"I’m sure he would love to do a third series," he told the website. "It’s very unlikely they would have 'Sherlock' without Sherlock."

The show airs on PBS in the United States and is one of the latest in a series of popular shows to come over from across the pond. The longtime favorite "Doctor Who" is one of the most widely watched, while the new series "Downtown Abbey" has attracted a lot of viewers as well.
