Disney planning 3D release of other classic movies

By all measures, the re-released "The Lion King" in 3D has been an overwhelming success. Realizing it has a good thing going, Disney recently announced that it will give similar treatments to classic family movies including "Beauty and the Beast," "Finding Nemo," and "The Little Mermaid," according to The Hollywood Reporter. "The Lion King 3D" has earned an impressive $80 million domestically in its limited release and has even surpassed the $100 million in terms of global returns. The new line of films will all come out at different times, but it will be "Beauty and the Beast," that hits theaters first with a January 13, 2012 release. The next in the series will be released periodically over the following 12 months, the news source reports, including a January 18 date for "Monsters, Inc." and a September 13 release for "The Little Mermaid." "Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we're fortunate to have a treasure trove of both," Walt Disney Studios president Alan Bergman said in a statement. Families interested in checking out some more contemporary movies may want to watch "Up" or "Wall-E."
