Mel Gibson turns in dramatic performance in 'The Beaver'

Sometimes comedy-drama movies can be a bit of a misnomer. While such films have somewhat of a humorous slant, at their heart they are usually compelling pieces of dramatic work. Such is the case with the star-studded movie "The Beaver." The new release DVD hits shelves August 23. The story follows Walter Black (Mel Gibson), who has hit a bit of a rough patch. His wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) has kicked him out and he has to take up residence in a hotel. Depressed and alone, he attempts suicide but is unsuccessful. Eventually he finds a discarded beaver puppet, and begins to use it to heal. Walter manages to communicate with others through the puppet, and he always has it on him. By using the puppet, he manages to get his life together, reconnecting with his wife, son and even doing better at work. However, his life begins to fall apart once more, leaving the viewer wondering if he will ever be okay. "The Beaver" deftly toes the line between comedy and drama, as some of the best movies of the last several years of done.
