Sherwood Schwartz, the creators of classic TV shows including "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch" died on Tuesday at the age of 94. Schwartz leaves behind a legacy of developing some of the most iconic characters and stories in television history.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Schwartz got his start writing for Bob Hope's radio show in the late '30s, but it was not until 1964, when "Gilligan's Island" premiered, did he get his first billing as a show's creator. In addition to the now-famous story, he also wrote the show's legendary theme song. Despite the fact critics were less-than-keen on the show and it only ran for three seasons, it has lived on in the annals of entertainment history.

In 1969, he debuted the "The Brady Bunch," which ran for five seasons and spawned a loyal following the still persists today. According to Entertainment Weekly, in a 1997 interview Schwartz said that the thought behind both the series were essentially the same.

"Where could they be that they had to get along with each other? That was the idea for the show, and it’s the most important idea in the world today," he told the Archive of American Television.
