'Rid Riding Hood' gives classic fable a dark spin

Almost everybody knows the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood, but the timeless tale recently received a much darker update. "Red Riding Hood," which features an impressive ensemble cast, puts a horrific spin on the children's story. The new release DVD comes to stores June 14. Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a young woman who plans to run away with the local woodcutter Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her getaway is interrupted when a wolf that terrorizes her small town kills her sister, setting off a hunt for the beast. After what seems like a successful trip into the woods to kill the wolf, the mysterious Father Solomon (Gary Oldman) informs them that he is still on the prowl. He is proven right as the wolf comes back and plagues the town once more. Valerie and Peter decide to take matters into their own hands, but will they be able to defend their town without suffering the consequences? "Red Riding Hood" deftly blends both fantasy and horror movie elements. Fans of such films may want to check out similar titles including "Paranormal Activity" and "30 Days of Night."
