It was recently announced that "Titanic" was set to be re-released in 3D in 2012, and now it looks like another one of the biggest movies of the '90s is getting in on the action as well. Disney recently announced that it will be releasing "The Lion King" in 3D on September 16, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The family movie, which remains the highest grossing hand-drawn film of all time, joins a slew of other classic films getting a re-release in the coming months. The Star Wars saga will get its own 3D run starting in February 2012 with "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace." And although it won't be in 3D, an extended version of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy will be making its way through theaters this summer.

Few movies have had the impact of "The Lion King," however, which is often credited with ushering a new age of animated films that dominated the latter half of the '90s and the 2000s. Without the classic movie, other favorites such as "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille" would may not have been possible.
