It's been more than 10 years since Electronic Arts released "American McGee's Alice" for PC. Gamers have been eagerly awaiting the title's sequel, "Alice: Madness Returns," and if the early previews are any indication, it will be a creepy and unique take on the classic novel. The game is scheduled for a June 14 release.

While most people are familiar with the animated film or the recent live action release of "Alice in Wonderland," the video game is much different. In fact, Paste Magazine reports that it's filled with dark imagery complete with a twisted landscape, monsters, blood and fire.

The latest title picks up 11 years after the end of the previous game and follows Alice upon her release from a mental institution. Haunted by the memory of her parents, the young girl finds herself in a world of hallucinations and terror, so she escapes to Wonderland, which has been transformed by her insanity into a nightmare.

This macabre take on the book will certainly appeal to fans of other brooding video game titles such as "Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles" and "Batman: Arkham Asylum."
