The nominations for the Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, bringing with it cheers and jeers from many film buffs.

Not so surprisingly, "The King's Speech" led the pack with 12 honors, including Colin Firth for Best Actor and Geoffrey Rush for Best Supporting Actor. The film is also in the running for Best Picture.

Annette Bening scored a Best Actress nomination for "The Kids are All Right," while Natalie Portman will be vying for the statuette for her work in "Black Swan." Movie insiders believe the two performers are the ones to beat on Tinseltown's glitziest night.

Of course, there were some surprises related to the results - Javier Bardem is in the running for Best Actor for his work in "Biutiful," pitting him against Jesse Eisenberg from "The Social Network." Also, Hailee Steinfeld, the 14-year-old star of "True Grit," will be competing against Melissa Leo from "The Fighter" and Jacki Weaver from "Animal Kingdom" for Best Supporting Actress.

The 83rd annual Academy Awards will air on February 27 and will be hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
