Some shocking news has floored fans of Discover Channel's "Storm Chasers": Matt Hughes, the star of the show, has died.

In an episode titled "Dedication," audiences learned that Hughes had passed away in May. The news source reports that most home viewers weren't aware of him dying until the dramatic tribute aired last night.

The Discovery Channel released a statement about the incident on their website.

"Matt Hughes, a featured meteorologist on Storm Chasers passed away on May 26th, 2010 in Wichita, Kansas due to an injury unrelated to his chasing activities. Sean, Reed, Tim and everyone involved in Storm Chasers, mourn the loss of their friend and colleague," the statement said.

"Storm Chasers" premiered on the Discovery Channel three years ago, and quickly became one of the most popular programs on the network.

Hughes had built a career from storm chasing, a passion which he followed for more than two decades. Aside from working on "Storm Chasers," the 30-year-old worked for KAKE-TV, an ABC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Kendra, and his two sons, Hunter and Collin.
