Sylvester Stallone has still got it. According to Entertainment Weekly, his recent action-adventure "The Expendables" beat out a number of noteworthy competitors to take the top box office slot.

Grossing $35 million in ticket sales, Stallone's tale of a group of mercenaries who travel to South America toppled the much-hyped Julia Roberts drama "Eat Pray Love," which took in an estimated $23.7 million. It also ousted the Michael Cera teen flick "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," which grossed $10.5 million from moviegoers, bringing the comedy to a disappointing fifth place.

"The Expendables" is just another indication that Stallone knows how to write and direct as well as he acts. The veteran performer was nominated for two Academy Awards in 1977 for his film "Rocky," including Best Actor in a Leading Role and another for Best Screenplay.

Stallone also wrote and directed the cult hits "Rambo" and "Rocky Balboa."ADNFCR-2673-ID-19926430-ADNFCR
