"Amreeka" tells the story of Muna (Nisreen Faour), a single Palestinian mother who unexpectedly wins the green card lottery and is allowed to leave her country.

With their newfound freedom, Muna and her son Fadi decide to go to America. They move in with Muna's sister Raghda (Hiam Abbass) and her family in a suburb of Chicago.

However, when the pair arrives in the country, racial prejudices and cultural differences make it difficult for Muna to find a job and assimilate. But with the help of friends and neighbors, Muna and Fadi begin to feel comfortable in their new home.

The film was written and directed by Palestinian-American filmmaker Cherien Dabis about her own family's struggle to make a new life for themselves in America.

After "Amreeka" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Variety magazine named Dabis one of the 10 Directors to Watch in 2009.

"Amreeka" is currently available on DVD.
