James Cameron has helmed some of the most popular films of our time, including "The Terminator,""Aliens" and "Titanic."

In his latest film, "Avatar," the director returns to some of his favorite themes, which include war, alien life, technology and, of course, true love.

"Avatar" tells the story of one marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who was paralyzed in combat. However, a new military initiative lures Jake to a planet that is aptly named Pandora. The U.S. is fighting with Pandora's natives, the Na'vi, over the valuable resources of their planet.

Eventually, a new technology developed to infiltrate the Na'vi's society makes it possible for Jake to walk again, giving him a new perspective on the conflict.

An Avatar is typically a cyber character through which gamers can experience the digital world – the same principle is applied in the film, but Jake’s Avatar is a genetically engineered Na’vi.

Cameron claims to have chosen Worthington, who's Australian, because he was looking for a relatively unknown actor who would be up for anything.

The movie also features Sigourney Weaver as botanist Dr. Grace Augustine. Weaver appeared in Cameron's "Aliens" movie, the sequel to the 1979 film by Ridley Scott.

The film will be released in both 3D and 2D formats.
