(We do not collect these names or emails!)"A Christmas Carol," starring Jim Carrey, was number one at the box office this weekend. The film grossed $31 million and kicked off the holiday movie season, the Associated Press reported.
The film, based on the Charles Dickens' classic tale, tells the story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (voiced by Carrey). Scrooge is lonely and mean until the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future visit him on Christmas Eve. The spirits urge him to change his greedy ways before it's too late, driving home the importance of honesty and generosity.
The film boasted a $175 million budget, not including marketing costs. Motion-capture animation and 3-D special effects were combined to make it a unique and cutting-edge viewing experience.
Fans of "The Polar Express," another motion-capture holiday film which featured Tom Hanks, will appreciate the realistic animation style. Motion capture can lend itself well to fantastical tales such a "A Christmas Carol," allowing for both a detailed range of facial expressions and breathtaking special effects.
Gary Oldman of "The Dark Knight" lends his voice to several roles in the film, including Bob Cratchit, Jacob Marley and Tiny Tim. Colin Firth, who plays Mark Darcy in "Bridget Jones' Diary," voices the role of Fred, Scrooge's cheerful nephew.
